Do I have too many goals?

Do I have too many goals?

Is it better to focus on one goal, achieve it, and then move on to the next goal?

I have many long term goals. Some of them you feel like they could take a long time to achieve.

Sometimes I think it is better to be more direct and go for one goal with great focus rather than try to achieve many at once.

Or maybe the nature of my goals is that they do just take a long time to achieve. Some goals are difficult and can’t be easy to achieve quickly or easily.

One goal I would like to achieve is to run a marathon.

The longest I have ever run is 30km which I did on my 30th birthday last year. I was dying for the last 5-6kms but I was so happy when I did it. 30 kms for turning 30 seemed like a fun idea.

Having done that I feel like I could achieve the goal of a marathon this year.

But should I just train and do it, set it as my goal. Or do I put that goal off for another time in the future while I pursue other goals in the meantime?

It’s a tough decision to make.

I have many different interests and things I want to do.

Will the time that I dedicate towards this goal get in the way of other goals I should be aiming for instead.

Having a child has made me want to be a better father and husband. These goals have become more important to me over the last 3 months since my son has been born.

These goals are so broad and hard to define when compared to a goal like ‘run a marathon’. You know when you’ve done it.

But how do I know when I am or have become a good husband or father. It’s a goal that you have to be constantly be working towards and maintaining, a forever goal.

So maybe the marathon idea can wait for another time. Or maybe I focus on it while I have my health? Maybe I should focus on both goals at once. How many goals is too many? 3 goals, 5 goals maybe?
